Secret Santa Generator
Draw Secret Santa names in seconds. Nobody is ever matched with themselves, couples can be kept apart, and each person can reveal their own match privately on screen.
Your Secret Santa draw
Pass the device around and let everybody tap their own name. Nothing is revealed until it is tapped.
Copying and printing show every match, so only the organizer should use those buttons.
How to use the Secret Santa generator
Start by typing everyone who is taking part into the name boxes. Four boxes are ready when the page loads; use Add another person for a bigger group, or paste a list you already have in an email or group chat and the names are split into separate boxes automatically. Every name has to be different, so add a last initial when two people share a first name.
Next, add any exclusions. An exclusion is a pair of people who must not be matched with each other, which is the usual fix for couples who live together, for parents and children, or for two friends who already buy each other a gift. Exclusions work in both directions, so adding one rule covers both people. Finally, set an optional spending limit and pick your currency: dollars, pounds or euros.
Press Draw names and the assignments appear in a list. Each row is hidden until it is tapped, so you can hand one phone or laptop around the room and let everyone reveal their own match without seeing anybody else's. If you are organizing remotely, use Copy results and send each person their own line by private message.
How the draw works
A fair Secret Santa draw is more than a shuffle. The generator treats the draw as a puzzle and searches for an arrangement where three rules all hold at once: every person gives exactly one gift, every person receives exactly one gift, and nobody is matched with themselves or with someone on their exclusion list. Because it searches properly rather than shuffling and hoping, it finds a valid result whenever one exists, even with a long list of exclusions.
Some combinations genuinely cannot work. Three people with one exclusion pair, for example, leaves the two excluded people both needing to give to the same third person. When that happens the tool tells you the rules are impossible instead of quietly breaking one, and you can remove an exclusion and draw again.
Tips for a better gift exchange
- Agree the budget first. Around $20 to $30, £15 to £25, or €20 to €30 suits most offices and families. Our gift budget calculator helps you plan the rest of your list.
- Set a deadline. Give people two or three weeks to shop. The Christmas countdown is a useful reminder of how long is left.
- Collect a wish list. Three ideas per person removes most of the guesswork.
- Draw again if you need to. If someone drops out, add or remove their name and press Draw names again for a fresh set of matches.
Your names stay on your device
The whole draw runs in your browser using JavaScript. No names, budgets or results are sent to a server, saved to an account, or shared with anyone, which also means results disappear if you refresh the page. Copy or print them before you close the tab.
Frequently asked questions
Can somebody draw their own name?
No. Drawing your own name is blocked before the assignments are worked out, so it can never appear in the results no matter how many people are taking part.
How do I stop a couple from drawing each other?
Add an exclusion. Choose both people in an exclusion row and they will never be matched together in either direction. You can add as many exclusion rules as you need.
What is the smallest group for Secret Santa?
Three people. With only two, each person automatically knows who has them, so the generator asks for at least three names before it will draw.
Why does it say no valid draw is possible?
Your exclusions are too restrictive for the size of the group. For example, three people with one excluded pair leaves no legal option for the last gift. Remove an exclusion, or add more participants, and draw again.
Can I run a Secret Santa draw when everybody is in a different place?
Yes. Run the draw yourself, use Copy results, and send each person only their own line in a private message or email. Nothing is emailed automatically, so no one needs to sign up or share an address.
Are the names saved anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored by FestiveHelper. Refreshing the page clears the draw, so copy or print the results if you need to keep them.
